April Box Office: Nigerian Cinemas Rake in N566m in Revenue

The month of May is upon us, which means warmer weather, longer days, and of course, new movies to look forward to. From action-packed thrillers to romantic comedies, there is something for everyone this month. Among the highly anticipated new movie releases are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Little Mermaid, and The Mother.

There are also documentaries such as Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which chronicles the life of actor Michael J. Fox as he battles Parkinson’s disease, and Book Club: The Next Chapter, the follow-up to the 2018 hit that takes the readers on a cross-country adventure in Italy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Release Date: May 5 in Theaters

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the final chapter of the franchise, and viewers are eager to see what happens to the ragtag group of heroes in their last adventure. The cast is back, including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and Dave Bautista as Drax. The film promises to introduce new faces to the mix, including Adam Warlock, Cosmo the Spacedog, and The High Evolutionary.

Love Again

Release Date: May 5 in Theaters

For those in the mood for a love story, Love Again starring Sam Heughan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, might be just the ticket. The film follows Mira, who sends text messages to her deceased partner’s cellphone in an attempt at closure, only to have the message go to Rob, who is the new owner of that number. Confused and intrigued, Rob decides he needs to track the person on the other end of these messages down. The film features new music by Celine Dion, who plays herself.

The Mother

Release Date: May 12 on Netflix

Ben Affleck stars in the action thriller Hypnotic, directed by Robert Rodriguez. The film follows detective Danny Rourke as he searches for his missing daughter and gets mixed up in a secret government program that involves reality-altering crimes. Directed by Niki Caro, The Mother stars Jennifer Lopez as a hardened assassin who leaves the safety of her Alaskan hideout to protect the daughter she had to leave behind at birth.

The Little Mermaid

Release Date: May 26 in Theaters

The Little Mermaid finally gets the live-action treatment, with Halle Bailey playing the titular character. Directed by Rob Marshall, the film promises to be a visually stunning reimagining of the classic 1989 Disney animated film. Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem also star in the film.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

Release Date: May 12 on Apple TV+

For documentary lovers, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie is a must-see. The Apple TV+ documentary follows the life of Michael J. Fox as he battles Parkinson’s disease, continuing to be one of the most fun and optimistic people around. Book Club: The Next Chapter sees Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen reprise their roles in a sequel that sends the readers to Italy before Vivian ties the knot.

May has plenty of new movie releases to choose from, whether it’s a Marvel adventure or a heart-warming romance. With cinemas starting to open up again, this is the perfect time to grab some popcorn and catch a new release on the big screen.
