Enola Holmes is a 2020 mystery film starring Millie Bobby Brown as the title character, the teenage sister of the already famous detective Sherlock Holmes, played by Henry Cavill. Enola is not a younger female version of her older brother, She is her person, less analytical than he is, and much more empathetic. She is observant and determined, and she has great fighting skills and a good command of mechanical physics.

In September 2020, Brown and Bradbeer acknowledged their intentions to develop a sequel. Brown said she thought only about making the first film until she was on set, then she loved playing the character and said it would be a dream to do it again.

On May 13, 2021, Enola Holmes 2 was officially announced, with writer Jack Thorne and director Harry Bradbeer returning while Brown and Cavill would reprise their roles.

PLOT OVERVIEW

I particularly loved the opening scene, in this sequel. The first shot was her back and then her feet and the hems of her skirt and petticoat as she was racing through the London streets, being chased by two men. She stops to address us, as is a norm throughout the film. “Perhaps I should explain,” she said.

Enola starts her detective agency but struggles to get clients, unlike her famous detective brother Sherlock Holmes. At that time, Victorian-era, a young female detective was very uncommon. Potential clients mistook her for the receptionist, or said she was too young, while some just get to the point of asking “Might your brother be free?”

On the verge of closing, things took a turn when a young factory girl named Bessie asks Enola to help find her missing sister Sarah Chapman. Bessie takes Enola to the match factory, which, upon her investigation, was experiencing a deadly typhus epidemic, and encounters Mae, who worked alongside the sisters.

There are advantages to Enola’s youth and gender as she could go undercover with Bessie, as a new employee in the match factory where Sarah worked before she disappeared. Potential clients may have underestimated Enola, but so do the people she is investigating.

Enola secretly follows Mae to the Paragon Theatre, where Mae and Sarah worked as dancers. She finds a letter written to Sarah by a secret lover.

On her way home, Enola comes across a drunken Sherlock and found out that he was struggling to solve his latest case involving the blackmail of government officials, but he could not trace the owner of the accounts where the money was sent.

Enola was determined to be independent, but it turns out that her case was connected to the one her brother was working on. The two ended up working together to unravel the case, Enola even got some assistance from her mother, Helena Bonham Carter.

LIKES

This was a really interesting watch and I enjoyed it, especially because it incorporated the true story about the 1888 matchgirls’ strike, as well as Sarah Chapman who was a real labour activist. I also like that this squeal was a sort of standalone, while the first Enola movie was based on the book series by Nancy Springer, this film was an original story.

This review would not be complete without applauding the casting that features Emmy-nominated actress Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, David Thewlis, and Louis Partridge. The issue of white phosphorous causing typhus was a real thing. It was known as phossy jaw. It took many years for white phosphorous to be banned, even after the connection was made.
Are you ready for the third instalment in this franchise? I am!

FUNNY LINES

The comic elements in the movie were something I also really enjoyed, I would list out some lines I loved, and I think you’ll like them too.

“Too many people make it their sole purpose in life to fit into the world around them. This is a mistake. It’s your path.” – Eudoria Holmes

“Those who can turn to others when they’re in need are the truly brave amongst us.” – Edith

“Sometimes, you’ll stumble. Sometimes, you’ll fall. But no matter how lost you feel, if you stay true to yourself, the path will always find you again.” – Eudoria Holmes

“My lords, reform is not a task to be accomplished, nor a bill that can be passed. Rather, it is a constant need for change.” – Tewkesbury

“It’s remarkable what can be done when people underestimate you.” – Mira Troy

DISLIKES

Honestly, I have no dislike for this movie, it was 10 out of 10 for me, but not everybody felt that way, as I saw several things people didn’t quite enjoy.

Fans of Sherlock Holmes did not like the way he is softened, vulnerable, and less capable than he is usually portrayed. Some viewers also disliked the female empowerment element of the story. Enola’s personality is very stubborn with a “know-it-all” attitude that makes her less appealing and charming to some.
