The Grammys, known as the most prestigious accolades in the music industry, not only celebrates the accomplishments of American musicians but also recognizes talent from around the world.

On June 13, 2023, The Academy made an exciting announcement, revealing three new categories that will be added to the upcoming 2024 edition of the awards.

The newly introduced categories are Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best Pop Dance Recording. These additions come on the heels of the two categories introduced last year: Best Songwriter and Best Song for Change.

The inclusion of the Best African Music Performance category is particularly significant for African artists, especially those in the Afrobeats genre, which has been instrumental in projecting the vibrant music scene of the African continent to a global audience.

Prior to the introduction of this category, Nigerian and African superstars had competed in the Best Global Music Performance category. Notable names such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Femi Kuti, and Angelique Kidjo have all been nominated in this category.

In the previous edition, South Africans Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini, and Nomcebo Zikode claimed the prize for their single ‘Bayethe’.

With the addition of the Best African Music Performance category, African artists will now have an exclusive platform to showcase their talent and have an increased chance of winning the coveted Grammy award.

This development is a significant step towards recognizing the immense impact and creativity that African musicians bring to the global music landscape.

The Grammys’ continuous efforts to expand its categories reflect the organization’s commitment to embracing diversity and representing the ever-evolving music industry.

By including genres like alternative jazz and pop dance, the Academy acknowledges the dynamic nature of music and aims to honour a wider range of artists and their unique contributions.

As the anticipation builds for the next edition of the Grammys, music enthusiasts across the globe eagerly await the recognition and celebration of exceptional talent, now including the vibrant sounds of Africa.

The new category dedicated to African music will undoubtedly provide a platform for the continent’s stars to shine on the international stage and further solidify their impact on the global music scene.
