Gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action against four individuals for allegedly defaming him on social media. Bassey’s legal team filed a petition with the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on April 1, 2024, accusing the individuals of criminal defamation and cyberstalking.
The accused individuals—identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid—reportedly spread false rumours claiming that Bassey fathered the child of fellow gospel singer Mercy Chinwo. These allegations, which circulated widely on social media platforms, have stirred controversy and caused significant harm to Bassey’s reputation.

In their petition, Bassey’s lawyers highlighted the detrimental impact of such baseless accusations, not only on Bassey’s personal and professional standing but also on broader societal perceptions.
They emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that false statements made with malicious intent can have long-lasting consequences, affecting individuals’ lives and relationships.
The lawyers argued that the actions of the accused individuals constituted character assassination, violating relevant sections of the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.
They stressed the need for swift and decisive action to address such harmful behaviour, calling upon the authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Bassey’s legal team urged the Inspector-General of Police to take necessary measures to uphold justice and deter others from engaging in similar acts of defamation.
