Nigeria Recovers $3.8bn Abacha Loot In 25 Years

Over a span of 25 years, significant amounts of funds linked to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, have been discovered and repatriated. Here’s a breakdown of the recoveries:

In 1998, a total of $750 million was recovered from the late Head of State’s family.

In the year 2000, $64 million was retrieved from Switzerland.

In 2002, $1.2 billion was secured from the Abacha family.

Moving to 2003, $160 million and $88 million were successfully repatriated from Jersey and Switzerland, respectively.

Another sum of $461.3 million was returned to Nigeria from Switzerland in 2005.

The timeline of recoveries over the years continued:

In 2006, Nigeria received an additional $44.1 million from Switzerland.

In 2014, $227 million was successfully recovered from Liechtenstein.

2018 saw the repatriation of the sum of $322 million from Switzerland.

In 2020, a total of $311.7 million was repatriated from the USA.

In 2022, the federal government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the United States of America, signed an agreement on August 26, 2022, for the repatriation of $23 million.

In the latest development, the Presidency, on November 3, 2023, announced that France is set to return $150 million, which had been looted by the former Nigerian military leader, General Sani Abacha.

President Bola Tinubu commended the European country for this decision, as confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement.
