The United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken, has revealed plans by the country to send relief materials like food, water, and medicine to address humanitarian crisis in Gaza as the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine rages.

In a statement posted on social media, Blinken made this known in a statement Blinken affirmed the United States’ support for Israel in its self-defense efforts and simultaneously highlighted the nation’s active commitment to ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Gaza’s vulnerable population.

Blinken emphasized that this aid is to deliver vital necessities such as food, water, and medicine, all of which have become increasingly scarce due to the crisis.

Gaza currently finds itself in the midst of a critical humanitarian crisis, grappling with severe shortages of essentials like water, electricity, food, fuel, and medical supplies.

The Rafah crossing, which serves as the primary conduit for humanitarian aid between Gaza and Egypt, has been largely closed for an extended period. This closure has resulted in an accumulation of humanitarian supplies on the Egyptian side of the border, leaving many Gazans without access to these essential provisions.

The backdrop to this crisis is marked by the relocation of approximately half a million residents from northern Gaza to the southern regions as Israel gears up for ground military operations. The consequences of these actions have been devastating, with more than 2,600 casualties reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry in the wake of Israeli airstrikes over the past week.

Gaza itself is a geographically constrained territory, a slender strip of land measuring around 25 miles in length and just over seven miles in width, slightly larger than Washington, DC.

It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the west, while Israel encircles its northern and eastern boundaries, with Egypt to the south. Gaza is home to approximately 2 million people, with a significant proportion of its population being young, as 50% are under the age of 18, according to the World Health Organization.

Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, has sounded a dire warning regarding the rapidly depleting resources in Gaza.

Water and electricity are running out, and the people of Gaza are confronting acute shortages of essential provisions like food and medicine. Lazzarini stressed the urgency of the situation, stating that “Gaza is being strangled. He also lamented the apparent loss of humanity on a global scale in light of these dire circumstances.
