Taiwan Receives First F-16Vs as China Military Pressure Intensifies

October 2, 2026

Taiwan received its first two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States on Friday, adding advanced combat aircraft to its air force as it faces sustained Chinese military pressure and seeks to strengthen its ability to defend its airspace.

The two aircraft, the first of 66 ordered under a roughly $8 billion programme, landed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung. The delivery begins the introduction of a new fleet that will eventually take Taiwan’s F-16 inventory to more than 200 aircraft, including older fighters upgraded to the F-16V standard.

Taiwan’s air force has scrambled aircraft almost daily to monitor Chinese military activity around the island, according to Reuters.

The F-16V programme, approved by Washington in 2019, has been delayed by production-line changes, supply-chain disruptions and technical issues. Taiwan has allocated NT$247.2 billion ($8 billion) for the 66 aircraft under the programme, known as Peace Phoenix Soaring.

The Block 70 fighters feature upgraded avionics and an AN/APG-83 active electronically scanned array radar, as well as modern electronic-warfare and mission systems. Their deployment adds fighter capacity to Taiwan’s broader air-defence network as Chinese aircraft operate with increasing frequency around the island.

The new aircraft will complement Taiwan’s existing forces rather than fundamentally alter the broader military balance. China’s People’s Liberation Army has a much larger inventory of combat aircraft, along with extensive missile, naval and unmanned capabilities that Taiwan would have to contend with in any conflict.

Taiwanese Defence Minister Wellington Koo said more aircraft were expected to arrive as production, testing and acceptance work progresses. The remaining jets are at different stages of production and delivery.

The arrival also underscores Taiwan’s reliance on U.S. arms supplies for major elements of its military modernisation.

Taipei has raised concerns over delays affecting previously approved U.S. weapons purchases, while Washington maintains that its policy towards Taiwan has not changed. Beijing has repeatedly opposed U.S. arms sales to the island.

For Taiwan, the significance of Friday’s delivery extends beyond the arrival of two aircraft.

Completion of the 66-jet programme will determine how quickly Taipei can expand its modern fighter fleet as it responds to an increasingly active Chinese military presence around the island.
