On Tuesday night, January 16, 2024, an explosion rocked Ibadan, Oyo State, resulting in devastating consequences. Governor Seyi Makinde has attributed the incident to illegal mining activities within the state, shedding light on the preliminary findings of ongoing investigations.

According to the Governor, initial reports indicate that illegal miners were responsible for the explosion. The illegal activities involved the storage of explosive devices in a residential building in Bodija, Ibadan.

This revelation comes after Governor Makinde visited the blast site and various hospitals attending to the injured. In a statement released after the inspection, Governor Makinde expressed his condolences for the loss of two lives and shared distressing statistics on the impact of the explosion.

Currently, 77 individuals are undergoing treatment in both public and private hospitals, highlighting the severity of the incident.

Governor Makinde, posting the press briefing on his official platform, emphasized that investigations are ongoing, assuring the public that those found culpable for this tragedy will face legal consequences.

He stated, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

The Governor detailed the immediate response to the crisis, stating, “We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo State to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations.

These operations will continue throughout the night. Earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident.”
