The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken a significant step towards ensuring drug safety in Nigeria by introducing a comprehensive database for registered and certified pharmaceutical products.
This initiative, unveiled by NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, aims to combat the sale and consumption of unwholesome pharmaceuticals in the country.
As part of this effort, the agency’s enforcement directorate has undertaken a massive operation, destroying 135 truckloads of fake, counterfeit, and spurious seized products.

Additionally, damaged and expired products, voluntarily submitted by stakeholders, were included in the destruction exercise, amounting to an estimated street value of about N16 billion.
The newly launched database, aptly named the ‘NAFDAC Green Book,’ features a comprehensive list of 6,432 registered pharmaceutical products.
Adeyeye emphasized the importance of public access to this valuable resource, stating that it will be accessible to members of the public starting from January next year. Individuals can utilize the website via their android mobile phones to verify the authenticity of any drug of their choice.
In her address, Adeyeye highlighted the recent prequalification of the Central Drug Control Laboratory (CDCL) in Yaba, Lagos State, by the World Health Organization. She detailed the agency’s efforts in constructing the laboratory from scratch, requiring a substantial investment of N4.5 billion.

We have always been consuming fake stuff. Nafdac and Dora couldn’t stop them all, they only stopped the ones they knew about.

We’re slowly dying and you people are cracking jokes. If we’re actually serious in this country we would have all gathered in various Nafdac offices to protest.
Anyway I’m just waiting for the next thing that’ll distract us from our sorry existence.

Dora Akunyili saved many lives, may her beautiful soul continue to Rest In Peace. 🕊
If the current NAFDAC are serious, they’ll follow the trend & the threads, & get those fake products out of the market. Nigerians already did the heavy lifting for NAFDAC.

We are dying needless deaths because of these fake products!— Dr Babatunde (@enodamade) December 19, 2023
When individuals think about NAFDAC, it's undoubtedly the image of Professor Dora Akunyili or the countless counterfeit drugs she consistently seized that immediately comes to mind. pic.twitter.com/UQAjGafO8H

Theres a difference between fake products as in placebo or fake/ harmful ingredients and knock off brands repackaging same or lesser quality of same product to resemble recognizable brands. Like, it aint original but its not gonna kill you.
