The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken a significant step towards ensuring drug safety in Nigeria by introducing a comprehensive database for registered and certified pharmaceutical products.

This initiative, unveiled by NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, aims to combat the sale and consumption of unwholesome pharmaceuticals in the country.

As part of this effort, the agency’s enforcement directorate has undertaken a massive operation, destroying 135 truckloads of fake, counterfeit, and spurious seized products.

Additionally, damaged and expired products, voluntarily submitted by stakeholders, were included in the destruction exercise, amounting to an estimated street value of about N16 billion.

The newly launched database, aptly named the ‘NAFDAC Green Book,’ features a comprehensive list of 6,432 registered pharmaceutical products.

Adeyeye emphasized the importance of public access to this valuable resource, stating that it will be accessible to members of the public starting from January next year. Individuals can utilize the website via their android mobile phones to verify the authenticity of any drug of their choice.

In her address, Adeyeye highlighted the recent prequalification of the Central Drug Control Laboratory (CDCL) in Yaba, Lagos State, by the World Health Organization. She detailed the agency’s efforts in constructing the laboratory from scratch, requiring a substantial investment of N4.5 billion.
