The 48-year-old rapper from Run the Jewels, known as Killer Mike, faced handcuffs and was escorted out of the 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony by Los Angeles police following an alleged physical altercation.

Killer Mike, whose real name is Michael Render, was arrested and booked for “misdemeanor battery” after an incident backstage, just after securing three Grammy awards, marking his first win in over two decades.

Confirming the incident, an LAPD spokesperson stated, “On Sunday, 4 February, just after 4 pm, a male adult was detained and handcuffed for a physical altercation that occurred at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court.”

Render, identified as the suspect, was booked for Misdemeanor Battery 243(A) PC and was in the process of being released, according to the LAPD statement.

Footage captured by the Hollywood Reporter showed the rapper being handcuffed and removed by Los Angeles police at Crypto Arena during the annual music awards.

This incident followed Killer Mike’s triumphant moments at the Grammy premiere ceremony, where he won three awards consecutively: Best Rap Album for “Michael,” and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists and Engineers” featuring Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane.

Render had been celebrating just before the detention, expressing thoughts on age and personal growth backstage. “The only thing that limits your age is not being truthful about your age or what you’re doing,” he said.

He reflected on his journey, stating, “At 20 years old, I thought it was cool to be a drug dealer. At 40, I started to live with the regrets and the things I’ve done. At 45, I started to rap about it. At 48, I stand here as a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I’ve done.”

During the pre-telecast, as he collected his third award, Render emphasized, “For all the people out there that think you get too old to rap, bullshit.” He encouraged artists of all ages to contribute to keeping hip-hop alive.

As of now, there has been no response from Killer Mike’s representative regarding the incident, and members of his team at the Grammys declined to comment when approached by the Hollywood Reporter.
