President William Ruto declared on Saturday, at the Three Basins Climate Change Conference in Brazzaville, Congo, that Kenya will be opening its doors to all African nationals without requiring visas, effective from the year 2024.

In his address, President Ruto underlined the importance of dismantling existing barriers to trade within the African continent. He called for a reduction in customs tariffs across the region, envisioning a swift implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which is intended to boost intra-African trade.

“It is time we realize the importance of trading among ourselves and allowing goods, services, people, and ideas to move freely across the continent,” President Ruto emphasized, highlighting the potential for continuous improvement in trade among African countries.

This is not the first time Kenya has taken steps to ease travel for African citizens, as Kenya abolished visa requirements for Angolan citizens earlier. In May, during the African Private Sector Dialogue Conference on Free Trade, President Ruto hinted that this move could signify the end of visa fees for African delegates visiting Kenya.

In recent months, Kenya has also made notable strides in visa-free access for several African countries. In August, Indonesia joined the list, becoming the third country within a month to enjoy visa-free entry to Kenya.

Before that, nationals from Comoros and Senegal were granted the freedom to enter Kenya without visas in July. In February of the same year, Kenya and Eritrea agreed to permanently waive visa requirements for their citizens
