CAN Suspicious Silence On TB Joshua’s Documentary

In the wake of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) release of a comprehensive two-year investigation into the late Nigerian pastor Temitope Joshua, also known as TB Joshua, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) finds itself under scrutiny for its deafening silence on the matter.

The documentary delves into disturbing allegations of sexual assault, physical abuse, faked miracles, and trauma suffered by over 25 individuals who were once followers of the renowned founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).

Temitope Joshua, born in 1963, had risen to prominence as one of Africa’s most influential religious leaders. His SCOAN, a 12-storey building in Lagos State, became a global phenomenon, drawing followers from around the world with promises of miraculous healings.

Joshua claimed to cure a myriad of ailments, from cancer to blindness, captivating the masses with his seemingly divine powers.

However, the sudden death of Joshua on June 5, 2021, just a week before his 58th birthday, left a void in the religious landscape and raised questions about the true nature of his legacy.

While the cause of his death remained undisclosed, the recent BBC investigation, conducted in collaboration with Open Democracy, has unearthed a dark side to Joshua’s life and ministry.

The exhaustive two-year inquiry involved more than 15 BBC journalists spanning three continents and focused on allegations of sexual assault, physical abuse, solitary confinement, and the orchestration of fake miracles.

Former members of SCOAN accused Joshua of amassing tens of millions of dollars through various channels, including pilgrimages, fundraising, video sales, and stadium appearances abroad.

Eyewitness accounts from over 25 individuals, spread across countries such as the UK, Nigeria, Ghana, the US, South Africa, and Germany, painted a grim picture of life inside Joshua’s compound.

The allegations raised in the documentary have sparked a global conversation about the accountability of religious leaders and the need for greater scrutiny in the face of such serious accusations.

One notable absence in this discourse has been the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), a prominent religious organization with the responsibility of safeguarding the interests and values of Christians in the country.

Despite the gravity of the allegations against TB Joshua, CAN has maintained a conspicuous silence, raising concerns among the public and within the religious community.

The silence of CAN in the face of such serious accusations is perplexing, given its role as a watchdog for Christian interests. One would expect an organization of its stature to take a proactive stance in addressing issues that concern the integrity and reputation of the Christian faith.

The ongoing conversation surrounding the documentary demands a response from CAN, as its silence is seen by many as tacit approval or, at the very least, a lack of willingness to engage in the difficult conversations that these allegations prompt.

The release of the TB Joshua documentary by the BBC has opened a Pandora’s box of allegations that question the authenticity of the miracles and the morality of the late pastor.

As discussions continue to gain momentum globally, the conspicuous silence of the Christian Association of Nigeria raises eyebrows and prompts the question: Where does CAN stand on the matter, and what actions will they take in the face of such serious accusations against one of Nigeria’s most influential religious figures? The public eagerly awaits a response from CAN, urging them to break their silence and address the concerns raised by this disturbing documentary.
