Bisina SomtoThe Federal Government of Nigeria is set to introduce a new order that will compel airline operators to provide compensation to passengers for delayed and cancelled flights not attributed to natural occurrences.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a meeting with airline operators in Abuja on Monday, October 9, 2023.
Minister Keyamo emphasized the need for airline operators to take responsibility for the inconvenience caused to passengers due to flight delays and cancellations.

He stressed that the government would soon begin implementing the provisions of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Act in this regard. Keyamo also noted that many Nigerians are unaware that compensation for flight delays is available under the law.
Keyamo stated, “On delayed flights, I want to speak for ordinary Nigerians who complain every day [about] delayed, cancelled flights. I know you have said all your reasons. You have blamed the government and a few things we do.
But I also want to say that it is not all the time that it is government. At times, you say you were waiting for passengers to finish passing through the screening machine. At times, they have finished passing through screening machines. They are waiting in the lounge for five hours and you cancel your flight.”
The Minister clarified that compensation would be required when flight delays or cancellations result from human errors rather than acts of nature. The NCAA Act already outlines the obligation of airlines to provide compensation under such circumstances.
While encouraging airlines to uphold passenger rights, Keyamo also urged them to establish reliable communication channels that allow passengers to receive timely cancellation notices. This move aims to enhance transparency and provide travellers with essential information about their flights.
