The United States has officially commenced the registration process for the Diversity Visa Program (DV Program) for the fiscal year 2025, and prospective applicants have until November 7, 2023, to submit their applications.

However, a notable exclusion looms over the application process, as Nigeria remains on the list of countries ineligible to apply for the DV Program. This ineligibility is not unique to Nigeria alone, as 17 other countries have also been excluded from participation for several years.

The DV Program, often referred to as the “Green Card Lottery,” aims to provide a unique opportunity for individuals hailing from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.

For the DV2025 program, the exclusion criteria include countries that have sent more than 50,000 of their nationals to the United States within the past five years.

In a statement issued by the US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, it was confirmed that Nigerians are no longer eligible for the Diversity Visa Lottery.

However, individuals born outside of Nigeria or those whose parents were born outside of Nigeria can still participate in the program. This essentially means that those born in Nigeria to Nigerian parents are ineligible for the DV Program.

The DV Program, which operates as a yearly lottery system, offers a pathway to obtaining a green card, allowing individuals from countries with limited immigration rates to the United States to secure permanent residency. Annually, the US State Department allocates 55,000 diversity visas (DVs) among six geographic regions.

The list of excluded countries for the DV Program 2025 includes Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including both mainland China and Hong Kong), Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Venezuela, and Vietnam.

As a result, individuals from countries not on this list of exclusions may still seek to participate in the US Diversity Visa Program, provided they meet the eligibility requirements set forth for the program.
