The Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University is offering an incredible opportunity for emerging leaders from both the United States and around the world.

This fully-funded, nine-month residency at Columbia University aims to empower individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing challenges within their respective communities and nations.

The core aim of the Obama Foundation Scholars Program is to identify and empower emerging leaders who have already demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing challenges within their respective communities and nations. These leaders are at a pivotal “breakthrough moment” in their careers, poised to make a lasting impact.

One of the distinguishing features of this program is its commitment to nurturing not only the knowledge and skills of its scholars but also the networks that facilitate the acceleration of their impact.

Through a comprehensive approach that combines academic study, skills development, and experiential learning, the program empowers scholars to become catalysts for positive change.

Program Highlights

The Obama Foundation Scholars Program, in collaboration with Columbia University, offers a diverse range of components designed to enrich the scholars’ experiences and sharpen their leadership abilities:

Weekly Seminar: The program includes a weekly seminar that delves into crucial global topics such as inequality, technological advancements, power dynamics, population shifts, and climate change. This in-depth exploration of these subjects equips scholars with a broad understanding of the pressing issues of our time.

Audited Coursework: This flexible program allows scholars to select and enroll in up to two graduate-level courses each semester at Columbia University, enhancing their academic and intellectual horizons.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, candidates must be fluent in English, possess a clear commitment to values such as inclusivity, community-centeredness, hope, courage, imagination, strategic thinking, accountability, integrity, and resilience.

Preference is given to applicants who have not yet enrolled at Columbia University, as the fellowship is a full-time residential program that cannot be pursued concurrently with a degree program.

Since its inception in 2018, the Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University has welcomed 70 emerging leaders from 54 countries. These scholars, with an average age of 33, represent a diverse range of ages, spanning from 26 to 45 years old.

They come from various leadership roles, both institutional and within movements, and are actively addressing a wide array of challenges.

These challenges encompass governance enhancement, improved access to healthcare, environmental sustainability promotion, advocacy for women’s rights, and the eradication of gender-based violence.

Scholars in the program receive comprehensive support, including:

A monthly stipend to assist with living expenses in New York City.

A furnished studio apartment within walking distance of Columbia University.
