Plateau Massacre: All You Need To Know

From December 23 to 25, 2023, Plateau State in central Nigeria witnessed a harrowing series of armed attacks that shook at least 17 rural communities in the local government areas of Bokkos and Barkin Ladi. The aftermath of this brutal onslaught left an indelible mark on the region, claiming at least 160 lives and causing injuries to more than 300 individuals.

Additionally, the attackers left a trail of destruction, inflicting significant damage to properties, and exacerbating the already dire situation.

The attacks carried out with a ruthless combination of guns and machetes, targeted vulnerable communities, setting ablaze houses and other structures. The affected areas, which include Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat, and Butura Kampani in Bokkos LGA, as well as NTV, Hurum, and Darawat in Barkin Ladi LGA, bore the brunt of the violence on December 24, 2023.

While the perpetrators of these heinous acts remain unidentified, suspicions point toward militias associated with Fulani herdsmen.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, leaving communities in a state of shock and fear. The brutality of the assaults raises concerns about the escalating violence in the region and the urgent need for decisive action to address the root causes.

On December 26, 2023, the Spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, provided an update on the situation. He confirmed that investigations were still underway, with authorities closely monitoring the evolving circumstances.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Okoro Alawari, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic events and extended condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

The extent of the devastation is staggering, with 221 houses set ablaze, 27 motorcycles burnt, and eight motor vehicles destroyed in Bokkos LGA alone. The toll on human lives is equally distressing, with over 79 persons losing their lives in Bokkos and an additional 17 deaths recorded in Barkin Ladi.

In response to the crisis, the Commissioner of Police directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to relocate to Bokkos LGA. Furthermore, a high-powered delegation of well-armed operational forces was deployed to the affected areas, with the dual purpose of preventing further attacks and assessing the extensive damages.
