MTN Service Down Time Caused By Damaged Undersea Cables

MTN, a telecommunications provider in Africa, has reported significant service disruptions across several West African nations.

The disruption stems from damage to vital undersea cables, impacting connectivity for millions of users. According to MTN Group, the disruption is a result of breaks in multiple major undersea cables, causing widespread service outages. The telco giant issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to resolving the issue promptly.

The disruption traces back to February 22, 2024, when Bayobab, a pan-African digital connectivity firm, collaborated with MTN Nigeria to install a ground-breaking 45,000km subsea cable named ‘2Africa.

This cable, acclaimed as the longest underwater cable globally, extends across three continents and traverses 33 countries, notably several in Africa. With landing stations in Lagos and Akwa Ibom, ‘2Africa’ aimed to revolutionize connectivity across the region.

MTN reassured its customers of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of the disruption. The company is actively rerouting traffic through alternative network paths and collaborating with consortium partners to expedite the repair process for the damaged cables.

Leveraging its robust network infrastructure, MTN aims to minimize service interruptions and ensure continued connectivity.

In a statement, MTN Nigeria attributed the network disruption to damage affecting international undersea cables across both East and West Africa. The company expressed gratitude for customers’ patience and understanding during the resolution process.
