Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is confirmed dead

February 28, 2026

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has been reported dead following coordinated U.S.–Israeli airstrikes on Tehran, according to Fox News and Reuters, both citing senior Israeli officials.

Israeli sources said Khamenei was killed when his fortified compound was struck during the early phase of Saturday’s military operation.

Two Israeli television networks reported that a photograph of Khamenei’s body was shown to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, describing it as confirmation at the highest political level.

However, there has been no official public confirmation from Iranian authorities as of press time.

Conflicting Reports Emerge Over Fate of Iran’s Supreme Leader After U.S.-Israeli Strikes

The reported death follows hours of intense bombardment targeting senior leadership facilities and strategic installations across Iran. Earlier in the day, Iranian state media had indicated that Khamenei was expected to address the nation, but the anticipated broadcast did not take place.

Prior to the Israeli claims, Iranian officials had insisted that Khamenei was alive. The absence of an immediate statement from Tehran? added to the uncertainty surrounding the reports, and independent verification from Iranian state institutions has not yet been issued. If confirmed by the Iranian government, Khamenei’s death would mark a historic turning point for the Islamic Republic.

He has led Iran since 1989, shaping its domestic political structure and foreign policy posture for more than three decades.

Witnesses reported that celebrations erupted in parts of Tehran following the emergence of the news. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show crowds cheering and gathering in certain neighborhoods, though internet restrictions across the country have made independent verification difficult.

The reported killing of Iran’s supreme leader is likely to have profound regional consequences. Analysts warn that the development could trigger internal political instability within Iran while also escalating tensions between Tehran, Israel, and the United States.

Iran’s constitutional mechanism requires the Assembly of Experts to appoint a successor in the event of a supreme leader’s death, but no official process has yet been announced. The Israeli military also said that seven Iranian officials and commanders were killed in the strikes, including Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to the supreme leader.

Further confirmation is expected as authorities in Tehran respond.
