Box Office: ‘Weapons’ Hits $89M In U.S Sales, Recording 43% Decline In Second Weekend

August 18, 2025

“Weapons” returned to the top of the box office charts, pulling in $25 million in its second weekend. The R-rated horror film dropped just 43% from its $43 million debut, a huge gain for a genre known for steep declines after opening.

The film has now earned $89 million domestically and $148 million worldwide after two weekends, surpassing its $38 million budget. “Weapons” is fast becoming a sleeper hit and marks the fifth consecutive win for Warner Bros. after recent successes like “A Minecraft Movie,” “Sinners,” “Final Destination Bloodlines,” and “Superman.

Meanwhile, Universal’s new action thriller “Nobody 2” opened in third place with $9.2 million from 3,260 theaters in North America and $14.1 million globally, just slightly ahead of the first film’s pandemic-era debut of $6.8 million. The sequel, which cost $25 million, was directed by Timo Tjahjanto and stars Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as Hutch Mansell.

In second place, Disney’s “Freakier Friday” collected $14.5 million in its second weekend, bringing its North American total to $54.6 million and $86.3 million worldwide.

Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” drops to fourth with $8.8 million, pushing its domestic haul to $247 million and global box office to $468.7 million. While strong compared to other recent Marvel releases “Captain America: Brave New World” ($415 million globally) and “Thunderbolts” ($382 million globally), it still falls short of restoring the MCU’s pre-pandemic dominance.

Rounding out the top five, “The Bad Guys 2” earned $6.9 million, bringing its total to $56 million domestically and $117 million worldwide.

In related news, Warner Bros.’ “Superman” continued its run with $5.3 million in its sixth weekend, reaching $340 million in North America and $594 million worldwide, on track to cross the $600 million milestone.

But not all new entries fared well. Sydney Sweeney’s “Americana” flopped with just $500,000 from 1,110 locations, one of the weakest wide releases in box office history.

Overall, the box office is 6.4% ahead of last year, but slowing momentum means the summer season’s $3.4 billion total won’t likely reach the once-common $4 billion benchmark.
