Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), has announced plans to introduce a fee for new users who wish to post on the platform. Musk believes this fee is necessary to address the growing issue of bots infiltrating the platform.

Responding to an X account discussing the new policy, Musk stated, “A small fee for new user write access is the only way to curb the relentless onslaught of bots. Current AI and troll farms can easily bypass ‘are you a bot’ checks.” However, specific details about the fee amount and implementation date were not provided.

This isn’t the first time X has experimented with charging new users. Last October, the platform began charging new unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines $1 per year. While these users could read posts, they had to pay a fee to interact with content, such as posting, liking, or replying. Musk may adopt a similar fee structure for new users in other regions.

The move comes as Musk announced a crackdown on bot accounts and trolls on X, which has led to the suspension of millions of accounts. Musk emphasized that the company would not only suspend bot accounts but also trace and prosecute their owners.

The decision to combat bots follows complaints from users and advertisers who feel that the platform is overrun by automated accounts, diminishing the significance of genuine human users. Bots on X can perform various actions autonomously, including liking posts, reposting tweets, and sending direct messages.

“System purge of bots & trolls underway. Please reply to me or @Xeng if legitimate accounts are suspended. X Corp will be tracing the people responsible and bringing the full force of the law to bear upon them,” Musk declared.
