2023 was a remarkable year for the Nigerian Film industry, with several movies competing for the spotlight in cinemas nationwide. Five Nigerian films achieved a commendable feat, crossing the ₦100 million mark at the box office, with one standout contender surpassing the billion-naira milestone. A Tribe Called Judah

Topping the list is Funke Akindele’s holiday blockbuster, “A Tribe Called Judah.” Released on December 15, 2023, the film follows the story of five brothers on a daring mission to rob a company and save their mother, played by Akindele herself. The star-studded cast, featuring Jide Kene Achufusi, Timini Egbuson, Uzee Usman, Tobi Makinde, and Olumide Oworu, resonated with audiences nationwide.

The opening weekend saw an impressive ₦113,274,357 million in earnings, setting a new record as the highest-grossing Nollywood opening weekend of the year. As the year concluded, the film’s total gross reached an astonishing ₦854,284,939 million, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood title of 2023 and the highest ever, crossing the billion-naira mark.

Malaika

Securing the second position is Toyin Abraham’s “Malaika,” a poignant tale revolving around a couple’s struggle to conceive. Released between December 22-24, 2023, it amassed ₦33,918,250 during its opening weekend, marking it as the second highest-grossing Nollywood opening weekend.

By the end of the year, “Malaika” achieved a total gross of ₦160,995,869 million, solidifying its place as a significant contributor to Nollywood’s success in 2023.

Ada Omo Daddy

Mercy Aigbe’s “Ada Omo Daddy” claimed the third spot, released on the same day as “A Tribe Called Judah.” Despite the tough competition, the film garnered a noteworthy ₦27,620,446 million during its opening weekend and closed the year with a total gross of ₦133,663,236 million.

Orisa

“Orisa” faced stiff competition from Hollywood blockbusters but made history with the biggest epic opening of the year, earning ₦27.6 million in its first week. The film reached the ₦100 million milestone within seven days, a remarkable feat for a 2023 title.

After a 14-week run across cinemas nationwide, “Orisa” claimed the fourth position with a total gross of ₦127.89 million.

Merry Men 3: Nemesis

Closing the top five is the crime comedy “Merry Men 3: Nemesis,” produced by comedian Ay Makun. Making its debut on October 13, 2023, the film swiftly earned ₦100 million in just four weeks at Nigerian cinemas.

With a total gross of ₦118,491,970, it concluded its theatrical run and is set to make its way to Netflix later this month.
