The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 2023 election, Peter Obi, has faulted the N15 billion allocation for the Vice-President’s residence.

The revelation, made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nysom Wike, has sparked a wave of concerns, prompting Obi to voice his disapproval through a series of tweets on Monday.

Obi described the allocation as “shocking and disheartening,” especially considering the pressing challenges facing the nation. He highlighted that recent budgetary allocations already included N20.5 billion for the renovation of the Vice President’s residences in both Abuja and Lagos.

Obi emphasized that with Nigeria holding the title of the world’s poverty capital, and an increasing number of citizens struggling to secure their next meal, prioritizing lavish residences for political figures raises ethical and practical questions.

Echoing Obi’s concerns, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to reject the proposed plan.

SERAP urged Akpabio to utilize his leadership position to assert the Senate’s constitutional oversight roles and reject not only the N15 billion allocation but also other potentially wasteful expenditures contained in the 2023 supplementary budget and the 2024 budget proposed by President Bola Tinubu.
