Mohbad: New Autopsy Reveals Possible Cause of Death

A new autopsy, conducted on the body of late afrobeat artist, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), has suggested a potential cause of his death. While the exact cause of death remains unknown, there is a possibility that a drug reaction played a role, based on the post-mortem and toxicology findings.

The autopsy report details that samples of Mohbad’s gastric content, blood, bone marrow, liver, kidney, and lungs were collected for toxicological analysis. Pathological findings indicates that Mohbad had sustained an injury to his right forearm, and his body was exhumed in a state of severe decomposition.

Despite the extensive examination, the autopsy revealed “no significant gross finding” that could directly explain the singer’s death. Toxicology results showed the presence of Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, but the level of concentration found was not within the fatal or lethal range.

Antihistamines, including Diphenhydramine, are commonly used to treat allergy symptoms and various other conditions such as stomach issues, colds, and anxiety. The report said, “It is noteworthy that the body neither had an autopsy nor was embalmed prior to interment on the second day.”

The body was exhumed on 21st September 2023, eight days after burial, following an exhumation order. The autopsy performed post-exhumation revealed significant decomposition of the organs. Except for the superficial injury on Mohbad’s right forearm, no other substantial findings could be linked to his death.

Mohbad, who passed away at the age of 27 on 12th September 2023, formerly a signee of Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley. Mohbad had left the label in February 2022. The unusual circumstances surrounding his death led to a state wide investigation and debate on social media.

In response to his death, the Lagos State Police Command established a 13-man investigation team on 18th September 2023, to probe the incident. The investigation also resulted in the arrest of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, among others.
