The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards have secured comedian Jo Koy as the host for the upcoming ceremony, marking his debut as an awards show host. The announcement comes after fellow stand-up Jerrod Carmichael hosted the 80th awards.

Expressing his excitement about the opportunity, Jo Koy stated: “I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year.

“This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (Google it)!” (For the curious, “Mahal Kita” translates to “I love you.”)

Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne shared her enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to have Jo host the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards and bring his infectious energy and relatable humour to kick off Hollywood’s award season.

We can’t wait to see what he has in store for the stars in the room and a global audience. We know Jo is bringing his A-game.”

Jo Koy, a veteran headlining stand-up, has been a notable figure in the comedy scene for years. Despite his success, he revealed in a previous interview with the Hollywood Reporter that the industry seemed slow to recognize his achievements.

He expressed frustration, saying, “I just felt like, ‘What are you acting like you don’t see? Or what is it that you’re not seeing? These numbers are clear as day. I’m an arena act.”

The Golden Globes, scheduled to air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on January 7, promise to expose Jo Koy to one of the largest TV audiences of his career. The awards recently moved to CBS after nearly three decades on NBC, following controversies surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Notably, the nominations for the upcoming ceremony feature a tie between Barbie and the final season of HBO’s Succession, each receiving nine nominations.

In June, the acquisition of all Golden Globes’ assets, rights, and properties from the HFPA by Globes producer Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge marked a significant overhaul, including changes to the awards’ voting members.

Dick Clark Productions is jointly owned by Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, the same entities that own The Hollywood Reporter.
