JAPA: 150,000 Nigerians Seek U.S. Visas In 2023

Mr. David Greene, the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, revealed that the embassy has conducted interviews for more than 150,000 Nigerian visa applicants in 2023, including an additional 30,000 students seeking U.S. visas.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Greene emphasized the embassy’s commitment to addressing visa-related challenges and reducing existing bottlenecks.

Greene acknowledged the stark reality that the demand for visa appointments surpasses the available supply, leading to ongoing efforts to bridge this gap.

He highlighted the embassy’s substantial progress in handling the backlog created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recall that in March 2020, the embassy implemented a five-year term for U.S. visas, contributing to the streamlining of the application process.

The Chargé d’Affaires encouraged prospective travellers to the U.S. to submit their visa applications early and ensure that their travel plans are associated with specific events.

“With over 150,000 Nigerians interviewed for visas this year, in addition to 30,000 students, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria is diligently working to accommodate the high demand,” said Greene.

“We acknowledge the challenges, and we urge applicants to apply early, tying their visa requests to specific events whenever possible. Despite the backlog, we are dedicated to ensuring that individuals who genuinely need a U.S. visa can obtain one.”
