2024 Oscars: ‘The Zone Of Interest’ Wins Best International Feature Film

The Academy Awards, currently underway in Los Angeles, witnessed a significant triumph as “The Zone of Interest” clinched the prestigious Best International Film Oscar. Directed by British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, this adaptation of Martin Amis’ novel emerged victorious, marking a historic win as the first British film to claim this honour.

Distinguished by its predominantly German and Polish dialogue, “The Zone of Interest” secured its eligibility for the award.

It overcame formidable contenders, including the Spanish-produced air crash drama “Society of the Snow,” helmed by JA Bayona, and Wim Wenders’ Japanese toilet-cleaner character study “Perfect Days.” Notably, “Anatomy of a Fall,” a prominent non-English-language rival, failed to secure a nomination, with France’s submission being “The Taste of Things,” a Juliette Binoche-led foodie drama.

The film features Sandra Hüller, known for her role in “Anatomy of a Fall,” portraying Hedwig Hoss, alongside Christian Friedel as Rudolf Höss, the Auschwitz death camp commandant. Glazer, accompanied by producer James Wilson, broke tradition as he addressed the audience alone.

He emphasized that “The Zone of Interest” is not merely a historical piece but a reflection on contemporary issues, particularly the consequences of dehumanization.

Glazer drew parallels between the film’s themes and the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, denouncing the exploitation of Jewish identity and the Holocaust to justify violence and oppression. He urged for recognition of the suffering inflicted upon innocent civilians, whether in the recent October 7 attacks in Israel or the enduring crisis in Gaza.
