Nigerian singer and songwriter Tems has shattered records by becoming the first female Nigerian artist to sell over 10 million units in the United States. Her Grammy-winning collaboration with Future and Drake, “WAIT FOR U,” officially surpassed the 10 million sales mark on September 30, 2025, according to Chart Data. This achievement not only showcases Tems’ global appeal but also cements her position as a trailblazer for African female artists in the music industry.
Tems’ journey to stardom began in 2018 with her debut single “Mr Rebel.” She gained international recognition in 2020 after featuring on Wizkid’s hit song “Essence,” which broke into the Billboard Hot 100 and earned multiple Grammy nominations. Her subsequent collaborations, including “WAIT FOR U,” have earned her numerous accolades, such as BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and a Soul Train Music Award.
The Nigerian songstress has been touring globally, with stops in Nairobi, Salvador (Brazil), and Los Angeles, where she performed at the iconic Dodger Stadium. Tems’ rise to fame mirrors that of Wizkid, who became the first Nigerian male artist to achieve the same feat with his feature on Drake’s “One Dance” in 2022. With her latest record, Tems solidifies her position as one of Africa’s most influential voices in the music industry.
