The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the recent killings of two women, including a nurse, by “one chance” robbers in Abuja, citing a “clear absence of preventive security strategy” and leadership failure in the Federal Capital Territory.

The victims, Nurse Chinemerem Chukwumeziem and Princess Ochigbo, were found dead in separate incidents, sparking outrage among Nigerians.

HURIWA National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, blamed FCT authorities, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, for being “distracted by politics” and neglecting their primary responsibility to protect citizens. “Those assigned to protect Abuja residents are too busy with 2027 election politics,” Onwubiko said.

The rights group demands President Bola Tinubu appoint a “competent, non-partisan technocrat” to run the FCT, suggesting Wike be made Director General of his presidential bid. HURIWA also urges citizens be granted permits to carry arms for self-defense, citing Section 33 of Nigeria’s Constitution.
