Tragedy Strikes Ethiopian Church: At Least 36 Killed, Over 200 Injured in Scaffolding Collapse

A devastating incident occurred at Arerti St Mary’s Church in Minjar Shenkora Woreda, central Ethiopia, where a wooden scaffolding collapsed during a religious festival, killing at least 36 people and injuring over 200 others. The temporary structure gave way under the weight of worshippers, with many more feared trapped or seriously hurt.

According to local police chief Ahmed Gebeyehu, the death toll may rise as some injured individuals remain in critical condition. Survivor Tadesse Tesfaye described the horrific scene, saying, “What caused the damage was when the scaffolding crumpled. It just crushed the people beneath. Some who were on the peripheries ran outside, but those in the middle perished.”

Eyewitnesses reported that scores of worshippers had climbed onto the wooden framework to view a mural on the ceiling before it suddenly gave way. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many still reeling from the tragedy.
