Shekarau Empowers 500 Food Vendors To Reduce Global Warming

SEN. Ibrahim Shekarau (APC/Kano Central) has called for a collective effort to fight global warming in Nigeria.

Speaking at an event where 500 food vendors were empowered on Tuesday in Kano, Shekarau stressed the need for enlightenment so that individuals could contribute to reducing environmental hazards.

He said: “We identified the need to educate people on the need for all to contribute to reducing global warming by modifying our environmental practices.”

“Food vendors were identified, trained and empowered with modern equipment to avoid using firewood in cooking the food they sell.”

The Registrar, Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria, Dr Yakubu Muhammed-Baba, noted that the senator engaged the council to train the food vendors.

He said the council delivered a comprehensive training programme and certification for micro trades on hygiene.

He said the empowerment and training would curtail the recurring cases of cholera outbreaks in the state, which was mainly as a result of consumption of unhealthy foods.

Muhammed-Baba called on other politicians to emulate Shakarau and contribute to educating people on best environmental practices.

Mrs Hauwa Umar, a beneficiary, praised Shekarau for his effort and pledged to move with the new skills she had acquired.

Another beneficiary, Muhammed Bashir, said hitherto he was using firewood in the tea joint she opened but pledged to utilise the new tools he has received. Shekarau has sponsored the training and empowerment of 500 food vendors in the state.

He sponsored the training to create awareness of the need for best practices to reduce global warming.
