Sowore Resurfaces as #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest Swells in Abuja; Police Now Escort Demonstrators

October 20, 2025

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has resurfaced at the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, energizing demonstrators and causing the crowd to grow steadily, with estimates suggesting it has doubled or tripled since earlier in the day.

In a notable shift from earlier tensions, police and security operatives are no longer disrupting the protest. Instead, they are accompanying the demonstrators along major routes, including Shehu Shagari Way, Aso Drive, and the Federal Secretariat axis, maintaining order and ensuring the march proceeds safely.

The protest remains peaceful, with more citizens joining as it progresses, though traffic continues to be affected in the city centre. Observers describe the scene as a massive, orderly demonstration advocating for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“It’s inspiring to see people coming out in such numbers, peacefully and with police ensuring safety,” said Chika Onuoha, a human rights observer.

Authorities have urged motorists and residents to exercise caution while commuting along affected corridors, as the protest continues into the afternoon.
