Confusion continues to trail the health status of Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, following conflicting reports over his whereabouts and condition.
While The PUNCH reported on Wednesday that Edun had been flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, the Presidency insists that the minister remains in Nigeria and is only recuperating from an undisclosed ailment.
According to The PUNCH, multiple sources close to the minister confirmed that Edun departed Abuja for Lagos on Monday night aboard a commercial flight before connecting to London later that evening on a British Airways flight. The newspaper reported that the minister, who has been unwell for several days, sought advanced medical attention abroad after initially receiving care in Abuja.

However, senior aides to President Tinubu have continued to deny the evacuation claims, describing the reports as exaggerated. According to The Nation, a presidential source maintained that Edun “doesn’t have a stroke” and “has not been flown anywhere,” stressing that he remains under medical supervision in Nigeria and is recovering well.

Similarly, former Minister of Youth and Sports and presidential aide, Sunday Dare, told journalists that he had spoken directly with Edun, who “sounded cheerful and in good spirits,” adding that reports of his being flown abroad were false.
Despite the Presidency’s denials, Edun’s absence has already affected official schedules. President Tinubu recently appointed the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the ongoing World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C. a role typically reserved for the Finance Minister.
Government officials explained that the change in delegation was “purely administrative,” but the timing has fueled speculation about Edun’s health and the stability of Tinubu’s economic management team amid mounting fiscal pressures.
Edun, a long-time ally of President Tinubu and one of the architects of his economic reforms, has been central to key policy shifts including the fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange unification, and the planned tax harmonisation agenda.
Analysts told Prime Business Africa that any prolonged absence could have implications for ongoing fiscal reforms and investor confidence, especially as the government navigates inflationary pressures and currency instability.
As of Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance had not issued an official statement regarding the minister’s health or travel.
The Presidency, however, maintains that Edun “is stable, recovering, and continues to discharge his duties,” even as independent reports suggest he is receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
