Barka Energies Debuts: Burkina Faso Seizes Control of Its Energy Sector

December 10, 2025

Burkina Faso has officially launched Barka Energies, marking a historic turning point in the country’s hydrocarbon distribution sector.

The move follows the acquisition of TotalEnergies Marketing Burkina’s assets by Coris Invest Group (CIG SA), creating a 100% Burkinabè-owned energy company with regional ambitions, Prime Business Africa reports.

The unveiling of the Kwame Nkrumah pilot station was described as “the concrete beginning of this new energy era,” symbolizing a national milestone in fuel distribution. At the ceremony, Yacouba Saré, Chairman of Barka Energies, highlighted that the launch represents a “particularly significant milestone” for the sector, born from “a clear vision, a strong ambition and an unwavering commitment to economic and social development.”

Vincent Ouédraogo, CEO of Barka Energies, emphasized the company’s broader mission: “Energy is an engine of development and it must be accessible to all. Our goal is to satisfy customers with high-quality products and services while promoting local skills and resources.”

Beyond fuel distribution, Barka Energies provides maintenance services and has created over 3,600 direct jobs, contributing significantly to the national tax base.

The company inherits nearly 200 service stations and decades of operational expertise from TotalEnergies and positions itself as the leading national hydrocarbon distributor. It is committed to maintaining high-quality fuel standards through additive treatment processes at dedicated sites in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso.

Barka Energies operates under five core values: leadership, safety, integrity, operational excellence, and boldness, while investing in infrastructure modernization and innovative solutions.

For decades, Burkina Faso’s downstream hydrocarbon sector covering fuel and lubricant distribution was dominated by foreign multinationals, with TotalEnergies Marketing Burkina as a prominent operator. While the brand was widely recognized, profits largely flowed abroad, limiting domestic economic impact.

In 2025, TotalEnergies initiated a strategic exit from certain African markets, creating an opportunity for local investors to assume control.

Coris Invest Group, led by businessman Idrissa Nassa, successfully acquired the network, inheriting both its infrastructure and operational know-how. This acquisition reflects a broader push for economic sovereignty, ensuring that the country benefits from its energy resources while retaining control over strategic assets.

The launch of Barka Energies also signals a regional ambition, with the company aiming to become “the leading regional energy player with increasing and sustained profitability.” Analysts say the move could inspire similar initiatives across West Africa, where foreign ownership of critical sectors remains high.

By transferring ownership from a multinational to a local entity, Burkina Faso strengthens its control over strategic resources, retains domestic economic benefits, and sets a precedent for locally-led energy enterprises in Africa.
