Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.

In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Tinubu, the former minister said he was stepping down to attend to his health. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced the development on Monday, confirming that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Badaru’s service.

Badaru, 63, has been a key figure in the administration’s security team, frequently leading high-level assessments and coordinating military operations at a time of rising insecurity across several parts of the country.

Some officials had recently hinted that the minister appeared overstretched by the demands of the portfolio, though no official details have been provided about the nature of his health concerns.

His exit also comes amid ongoing recalibrations within the nation’s security architecture, where the National Security Adviser has taken an increasingly central role in strategic coordination.

The resignation lands during a sensitive period for the government, following President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency. The President is expected to outline the scope of the emergency measures in the coming days.

Badaru served two terms as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before joining President Tinubu’s cabinet on August 21, 2023. His departure is expected to trigger consultations within the administration and the ruling APC, given his political weight in the North-West. Tinubu is likely to inform the Senate of his preferred successor later this week.

Prime Business Africa reports that the Presidency has not indicated when a replacement will be announced or whether the development will affect the rollout of the national security emergency plan.
