Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has declared her intention to resume duties on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, just before the National Assembly begins its annual eight-week legislative recess.
The Kogi Central lawmaker’s announcement follows a recent court ruling which nullified her six-month suspension from the Senate, describing it as “excessive and unconstitutional.” The judgment, delivered by the Federal High Court in Abuja on 4 July, ordered her immediate recall and reinstatement.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelDespite the court’s directive, the Senate is yet to implement the judgment, prompting the senator to notify the Clerk of the National Assembly of her resumption date.
In her letter, she maintained that the ruling is not discretionary, but a binding judicial order under Section 287(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates all authorities, including the legislature, to enforce decisions of competent courts.
Earlier scheduled to return on 14 July, Senator Natasha postponed her appearance in deference to the mourning period declared by the National Assembly following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. With plenary now rescheduled for 22 July, she affirmed her readiness to take her rightful place in the Red Chamber.
“I am committed to resuming on 22 July in line with the judgment of the Federal High Court, which clearly and unequivocally ordered my reinstatement,” she said.
Her legal counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Michael Jonathan Numa, emphasised that the court order is explicit and enforceable. “The judgment contains 12 definitive directives, not recommendations. The Senate is under constitutional obligation to obey,” the lawyer stated.

Sources within the Senate suggest that some members of the leadership view the judgment as advisory, not mandatory an interpretation Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team strongly rejects. They warn that continued non-compliance could lead to contempt proceedings or further legal action.
The legal and political standoff has sparked national debate over the limits of legislative authority and the supremacy of judicial decisions. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return is expected to test the Senate’s response to court oversight and set a precedent for future institutional accountability.
