The political tension within the Nigerian Senate escalated on Thursday after Senator Adams Oshiomhole called for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio over a recent amendment to the Senate Standing Orders that has sparked controversy among lawmakers.
The dispute centres on the Senate’s decision to revise Orders 4 and 5 of its Standing Rules, introducing a new eligibility requirement for aspirants to principal and presiding offices.
Under the amended provisions, only senators who have served at least two consecutive terms immediately prior to nomination are now qualified to contest for leadership positions within the chamber.

The adjustment has effectively excluded several first-term senators from leadership contests in the current 11th Senate, including Oshiomhole himself, triggering sharp criticism from affected lawmakers.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Oshiomhole described the amendment as “morally questionable” and politically motivated, arguing that it undermines fairness and democratic inclusion within the legislative process. He further contended that Senate President Akpabio would also fall short of the newly introduced requirement if applied strictly, alleging inconsistency in its implementation.
Oshiomhole argued that Akpabio’s previous rise to leadership positions in the Senate, including his tenure as Senate Minority Leader during his early years in the upper chamber, demonstrated that the current rule change contradicts established legislative precedent. He maintained that if the Senate is committed to enforcing stricter qualification standards, then the leadership must “lead by example.”
He further warned that failure by Akpabio to resign or reconsider the leadership structure could lead to a formal move for his removal, escalating the internal dispute into a potential institutional crisis.

The development follows a heated exchange during plenary earlier in the week, when Oshiomhole attempted to raise a point of order during proceedings but was ruled out of order by the Senate President under the newly amended rules.
