Tensions Rise in Uganda as Museveni Maintains Lead; Bobi Wine Alleges House Siege

January 17, 2026

Uganda enters a tense post-election period as the Electoral Commission reports Museveni’s strong lead in the presidential race, while opposition leader Bobi Wine alleges his home is under siege by the military, Prime Business Africa reports.

Updated figures from the commission indicate that Museveni has captured approximately 71.88 per cent of votes from over 93 per cent of polling stations, with Wine trailing at 24.46 per cent. The results are still preliminary, and the final certified tally is expected later today or in the coming days.

Bobi Wine, taking to his official X account, claimed that the military had surrounded his residence after he cast his ballot, entered the compound, and barred anyone from entering or leaving. He wrote:

“My house is still besieged no one allowed to come in or go out. They do this out of fear for the people they have offended by committing so many atrocities against them… #FreeUgandaNow”

Authorities, however, denied formally arresting Wine, stating that security was deployed solely to maintain public order.

The post-election period has also been marked by reports of violence, with at least seven people killed overnight in central Uganda amid clashes between security forces and civilians, though accounts differ across sources.

Observers and rights groups continue to raise concerns over the internet shutdown, delays in vote tallying, and the heavy security presence surrounding the election, highlighting the potential for escalating tensions if the final results are contested.

The Electoral Commission urged calm, emphasizing that vote collation is ongoing and that the final results will determine the official winner of the presidential election.
