MMIA Fire: 14 Rescued From Control Tower as FAAN Confirms Six Casualties, Airspace Shut

February 23, 2026

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the rescue of 14 persons trapped in the Control Tower of Terminal 1 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following Monday’s fire outbreak, as emergency operations continue at the facility, Prime Business Africa reports.

In an update on the incident, FAAN said coordinated firefighting, rescue and safety teams remain on ground to sustain containment and recovery efforts after the blaze affected parts of the old terminal complex.

According to the agency, a crane was deployed to support operations at the Control Tower, enabling responders to safely evacuate all 14 individuals who were initially trapped. Authorities recorded six casualties three males and three females all of whom are reported to be in stable condition. One of the affected persons has been transferred to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further medical evaluation and remains stable.

As a precautionary measure, the sixth floor of the impacted facility has been completely evacuated to facilitate ongoing emergency response and reduce potential risks.

Preliminary findings by the Fire Service indicate that the fire originated from the server room located on the first floor of Terminal 1. While the blaze within the departure hall has been largely contained, responders are maintaining close surveillance to prevent any resurgence or spread to adjoining sections.

In line with safety protocols, Nigeria’s airspace linked to the airport has been temporarily closed. The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is currently working to establish a temporary Control Tower to enable the safe restoration of flight operations as soon as possible.

FAAN stated that all emergency procedures were promptly activated and that it continues to collaborate with relevant emergency and support agencies to safeguard lives, infrastructure and operational integrity.

Further updates are expected as investigations continue into the full cause and impact of the incident.
