Tinubu Hosts Chinese Envoy, Push for Deeper Strategic Partnership, Zero-Tariff Implementation

President Tinubu on Friday received the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, at the State House in Abuja, as both countries moved to strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and expand cooperation across key economic and security sectors.

Ambassador Yu, who was accompanied by the Head of the Political Section of the Chinese Embassy, Zhu Songbo, announced the visit on his X handle, describing it as “a great honour” to meet President Tinubu. He noted that China-Nigeria relations had recorded “significant progress” over the past year, marked by practical cooperation and growing strategic alignment.

The Chinese envoy said bilateral relations had entered a “fast track,” with both countries consistently supporting each other on issues of core interest. He emphasised China’s commitment to backing Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and advancing economic agreements already in motion.

A major focus of the meeting was China’s readiness to accelerate the implementation of the zero-tariff policy on Nigerian exports a move expected to boost trade volumes and expand Nigeria’s access to the Chinese market. Yu said Beijing was prepared to work closely with Abuja to ensure the policy takes full effect while deepening alignment between both countries’ development strategies and consolidating strategic mutual trust.

In a statement issued by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, both sides “spoke highly” of the progress achieved under the China-Nigeria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and agreed to further deepen cooperation for the mutual benefit of citizens of both countries.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also confirmed the engagement via his social media handle, describing it as part of ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s foreign partnerships.

The visit underscores China’s growing role in Nigeria’s economic and security landscape, particularly in areas such as trade, infrastructure, industrial development and counter-terrorism cooperation, with expectations that the renewed momentum will translate into concrete outcomes in the months ahead.
