‘After Long Reflection, We Have Chosen APC’ – Enugu Governor Peter Mbah Dumps PDP

October 14, 2025

In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that his decision followed “a long reflection” on the state’s future.

The governor made the announcement during a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday, October 14, saying the move was driven by the need to connect Enugu and the South-East more effectively to the federal government for greater development.

“There comes always a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny. Today, after a long reflection, we have made a decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” Mbah stated.

He described the defection as a necessary and strategic step to secure a stronger partnership with the central government and unlock the state’s full economic potential.

“Leadership demands difficult, even painful decisions, in the service of higher principles and goals. And there comes always a time where everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny,” he added.

Mbah thanked the PDP for the support it had extended over the years but maintained that joining the APC was imperative to achieve his administration’s vision for progress. According to him, the shift reflects his commitment to better serve the people of Enugu under a platform aligned with federal priorities.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, noting that Enugu State has already benefited from what he called “massive federal support” under the current administration.

The governor’s defection was accompanied by a mass movement of political actors, including members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, councillors, commissioners, and top political appointees, effectively collapsing the PDP’s structure in the state.

His departure from the PDP comes amid reports that Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri may also be finalising his move to the APC. Earlier in the year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno had similarly joined the ruling party with their cabinets.

Analysts see Mbah’s defection as part of a widening shift in the South-East political scene, as governors and key stakeholders align more closely with the APC-led federal government ahead of the 2027 polls.

While the PDP is yet to issue an official response, political watchers predict that Mbah’s exit could trigger ripple effects across the region and redefine the balance of power in the months to come.
