Iranian authorities have intensified their campaign against political dissent, detaining at least four senior figures from the country’s reformist movement, according to state media.
Among those arrested are Azar Mansouri, leader of the Reformist Front; former diplomat Mohsen Aminzadeh; and ex-lawmaker Ebrahim Asgharzadeh, a former student leader during the 1979 U.S. Embassy takeover.
The arrests follow weeks of widespread demonstrations across Iran, sparked by political and economic grievances, which have left thousands dead and tens of thousands more detained in what observers describe as the most severe unrest since the Islamic Revolution.

Tehran prosecutors, quoted by the state-run IRNA news agency, accused the reformist figures of “organizing and leading activities aimed at disrupting the political and social situation” in the context of alleged threats from the United States and Israel. Additional members of the Reformist Front were summoned to Evin Prison, a site known for detaining political activists, for questioning.
The detentions appear linked to a January statement by the Reformist Front calling for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, to step down, and for a transitional governing council to assume temporary authority. Analysts suggest the arrests signal a deliberate move by Iran’s leadership to suppress even moderate opposition voices before they can gain momentum.
“The authorities have shifted their focus inward, targeting even loyal opposition figures,” said Ali Vaez, senior Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group. “The regime is determined to eliminate any political challenge before it strengthens.”
While the Reform Front advocates for gradual reform from within the system, public protests have blurred lines between reformists and other opposition groups, with demonstrators calling for Khamenei’s resignation and supporting Iran’s exiled crown prince.
The crackdown coincides with renewed nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States in Oman. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized Tehran’s insistence on retaining uranium enrichment capabilities a key sticking point with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened military action if a deal is not reached. The U.S. has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, along with additional ships and aircraft, to the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also scheduled to meet U.S. officials this week, with Iran expected to dominate discussions.
Separately, Iran issued warnings of planned rocket launches over Semnan province, home to the Imam Khomeini Spaceport, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The Reformist Front has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrests, and the exact charges remain unclear. Lawyers for the detainees indicated that some arrests may have been triggered by personal statements rather than any formal judicial case.
