September 30, 2025

The Federal Government has cancelled the parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The decision was announced in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

While the government did not give specific reasons for the cancellation, it stressed that the development does not diminish the importance of the occasion.

Imohiosen said all other programmes lined up for the anniversary under the theme “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation” will proceed as planned.

“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.

The Federal Government also apologised for any inconvenience the cancellation may cause, appealing for understanding from Nigerians, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests.

It further urged citizens to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing reforms aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Despite the cancellation of the parade, the Federal Government has declared Wednesday a public holiday to commemorate the anniversary.

Authorities have also assured of adequate security during the Independence period. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said it will deploy 4,500 personnel across Abuja to protect critical infrastructure and maintain order.

Government officials have described the 65th anniversary as a moment for sober reflection, acknowledging that Nigeria remains a “work in progress” while affirming the administration’s commitment to national development.
