Nigerian examination administrator Amos Josiah Dangut has assumed office as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), becoming the 14th head of the regional examination body responsible for examinations and certification across five West African countries.

Dangut began a five-year tenure on Oct. 1, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia. His appointment was ratified by WAEC’s International Governing Board at its 74th annual meeting in Accra in March.
He moves to the regional secretariat in Accra after serving as head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026. As registrar, he will coordinate the activities of WAEC’s national offices in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia.

Dangut joined WAEC in 1998 after beginning his education career as an examiner at St Louis College in Jos in 1994. He subsequently held positions in test development, examination security, branch administration, post-examination services and zonal management before taking charge of the Nigerian office.
During his tenure in Nigeria, WAEC expanded its use of technology in examination administration. The council said Dangut oversaw the rollout of computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the serialisation of question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System. He also supervised the Digital Certificate Portal, E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive.
Dangut holds a bachelor’s degree in Animal Production, a master’s and doctorate in Animal Science, and a master’s degree in Education Administration and Planning. He has also served on the governing boards of Nigerian education agencies, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

WAEC conducts examinations and awards certificates in the public interest across Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia. Its headquarters are in Accra, where the registrar serves as chief executive and coordinates the council’s regional operations.
Dangut takes over at a time when WAEC is continuing its shift towards digital examination, marking and certification systems, building on reforms implemented during his tenure in Nigeria.
