Obi Urges Diplomatic Engagement as U.S. Declares Nigeria ‘Country of Particular Concern’

November 3, 2025

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the recent declaration of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) by the United States government, alongside reports of possible military action.

In a statement on Monday, Obi said the development should trouble every well-meaning Nigerian, noting that the country is currently experiencing “an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and shocking loss of lives and property.”

Citing Amnesty International figures, Obi said over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023. He described the continued killings as “unwarranted and unprovoked,” calling for urgent and decisive action to end the bloodshed.

“The terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance,” Obi stated, adding that while insecurity did not begin under the current administration, the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government has shown “a lack of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism, and passion” needed to effectively govern and secure the nation.

He lamented what he described as the government’s failure to galvanize national unity and foster peace, truth, and justice, saying Nigeria deserves leaders who will protect citizens and restore public trust in governance.

Obi, however, stressed that the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United States should not be jeopardized by the current tensions.

“As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter,” he said.

He urged both countries to engage constructively and pursue diplomatic avenues to address Nigeria’s worsening security situation, emphasizing that cooperation and mutual respect remain essential to achieving lasting peace.
