North Korea on Saturday launched more than 10 ballistic missiles into the sea, South Korea’s military confirmed, as ongoing US–South Korea joint exercises coincided with renewed diplomatic overtures from Trump toward Kim Jong Un.
The missiles were fired from the Sunan area near Pyongyang at around 1:20 p.m. local time, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). Japanese authorities reported detecting a suspected ballistic missile, which appeared to have landed outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
The projectiles reportedly flew roughly 350 kilometers (217 miles) at an altitude of 80 kilometers, before splashing into the Sea of Japan. No casualties or damage were reported, and South Korean and US authorities are conducting detailed analyses of the missiles’ specifications.

Analysts say the missile tests are likely political signaling rather than preparation for immediate military action.
Analyst Perspective: A Compressed Geopolitical Statement
Some analysts describe the launch as a deliberately timed geopolitical message. On the same day North Korea fired missiles capable of being intercepted by Japan’s upcoming missile defense system, Trump signaled interest in meeting Kim during a trip to China, North Korea’s sole major ally.
The missile tests, analysts note, coincided with Japan preparing to participate in the Golden Dome space-based missile defense system, designed to detect and destroy missiles similar to those fired by Pyongyang.
In essence, Kim tested his missiles against the very system being co-built by the country whose leadership Trump is now offering a diplomatic channel.
Leif-Eric Easley, professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, said, “Kim Jong Un’s launch is as much about political signaling to Seoul, Washington, and Beijing as it is about military capability. North Korea is demonstrating leverage while exploiting divisions in South Korea and the United States.”
Analysts further link the timing to ongoing US operations in the Middle East, which have depleted American missile stocks and prompted accelerated missile-defense production in Japan.
The Iran conflict has created strategic urgency, while North Korea provides a separate provocation, China a long-term threat, and Japan the industrial capacity to defend against evolving hypersonic threats.
Strategic Context and Diplomatic Implications
North Korea has test-launched ballistic and cruise missiles for more than two decades, pursuing the ability to deliver nuclear weapons despite UN sanctions imposed since 2006. Previous US–North Korea summits in 2018 and 2019 produced no verified dismantlement, and missile testing resumed within months. Analysts suggest that the current personal channel between Trump and Kim carries leverage aimed primarily at Beijing.
The missile launches also follow US strikes on Iranian targets on Kharg Island and operations alongside Israel in the region. Kim has condemned these actions as “shameless,” while the North also canceled its annual Pyongyang International Marathon, a rare event open to foreign visitors.
South Korean authorities condemned the launches as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and called for Pyongyang to immediately halt such actions. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed officials to gather information and ensure the safety of aircraft and vessels.
With tensions high across multiple fronts, both Seoul and Washington maintain heightened vigilance, prepared to respond decisively to any provocation while closely monitoring North Korea’s military activities.
