NLC Slams Senate Over Natasha’s Suspension, Threatens Nationwide Action

September 12, 2025

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the Senate leadership for continuing to bar Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming legislative duties despite a court ruling voiding her suspension, describing the action as “a brazen assault on democracy” and “a dangerous slide towards fascism.”

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his colleagues of gross abuse of power and deliberate disenfranchisement of the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The labour movement faulted the Senate’s claim that the matter is sub judice, noting that the six-month suspension imposed on the senator has already lapsed. “This is the height of legislative bad faith a cynical ploy to silence dissent and manipulate the judiciary as a tool of political persecution,” the statement read.

Natasha Insists On Resuming Senate Duties Tuesday Says Court Order Is Binding

Akpoti-Uduaghan, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was suspended earlier this year over alleged “unparliamentary conduct.” A Federal High Court subsequently voided the suspension and ordered her reinstatement, but the Senate has yet to comply.

The NLC warned that by denying representation to Kogi Central, the Senate is “stealing the political rights of an entire district” and sending a dangerous signal to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections. The union vowed to mobilize its nationwide membership to resist what it described as a test run for suppressing opposition voices.

“This act is not merely an error in judgment; it is a declaration that votes are meaningless and can be invalidated by the whims of a tyrannical leadership,” Ajaero said.

The Senate leadership has not issued a fresh response to the NLC’s statement as of press time.

The confrontation underscores mounting tensions between organized labour and the federal legislature, raising fears of a broader political crisis if the Senate fails to heed the court order.

For residents of Kogi Central, the impasse means continued lack of representation in national lawmaking, budgeting, and oversight an absence the NLC warns could erode public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
