National Assembly Suspends Legislative Activities For Seven Days To Mourn Buhari

The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities for seven days in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Both chambers of the National Assembly – the Senate and the House of Representatives – announced the suspension on Monday during brief plenary sessions.

The suspension covers all official proceedings, including committee meetings, oversight functions, and public hearings, and will be effective from 14 to 22  July.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas led tributes to the late president, describing him as a “patriot who served Nigeria with unwavering commitment.”

“In honour of his service to the nation and the need for lawmakers to participate in his burial and national rites, all legislative activities will be suspended for one week,” Akpabio said on the floor of the Senate.

The late Buhari is expected to be laid to rest Today, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites. Preparations are ongoing for a state burial that will be attended by top government officials, dignitaries, and foreign representatives.

The National Assembly’s suspension of activities forms part of a broader national mourning effort, with flags flying at half-mast across government buildings and condolence registers opened at Nigerian embassies and consulates worldwide.

Tributes have continued to pour in from world leaders, former presidents, and ordinary Nigerians alike, reflecting on his legacy and impact on the nation.
