Veteran journalist and media mogul, Chief Dele Momodu, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s alleged takeover by antidemocratic forces. His decision takes immediate effect.

In a resignation letter dated 17 July 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP Ward 4 in Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, Momodu described the party as a “carcass” hijacked from within and outside in “broad daylight.”

“Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight,” the letter read. “It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them.”

Momodu, who ran for the PDP presidential ticket in the 2023 elections, further announced his alignment with a new coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he says is now home to “the majority of us” seeking democratic reform and renewed political direction.

While he expressed gratitude for the support he received during his time in the PDP, his departure adds to a growing list of defections and internal crises plaguing the main opposition party. The PDP leadership has yet to issue an official response to Momodu’s resignation.

This comes a day after the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was announced. Atiku said the resignation of his membership of the PDP  was a “heartbreaking decision.”  He also cited the ongoing crisis in the PDP, which threatens its future as a reason for quitting the party.

Atiku and Momodu’s move is expected to stir political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially among political analysts and supporters watching how shifting alliances will shape the next electoral cycle.
