Death Toll Rises as Australia Probes Terror Attack on Hanukkah Event in Sydney

December 15, 2025

Australia’s security agencies are intensifying investigations into the deadly shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach that has now claimed at least 15 lives, as authorities confirmed the attack was a terrorist act deliberately targeting the Jewish community.

Prime Business Africa reports that the shooting, which occurred on Sunday evening during a public Hanukkah event attended by families and children, has also left more than 40 people injured, including two police officers, several of whom remain in critical condition.

New South Wales Police identified the two attackers as a father and son, with the older suspect killed at the scene by police, while his son was arrested and is currently under heavy guard in hospital. Investigators say the attack was carefully planned and aimed at maximizing casualties.

According to Australian authorities, one of the suspects had previously been assessed by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) in 2019 over suspected extremist links but was not under active surveillance prior to the attack.

Eyewitnesses recalled scenes of terror as gunfire erupted near the Chanukah by the Sea festival, with some describing sustained rounds and chaotic escape attempts as people ran for cover along the beachfront. Videos circulating online appear to show a bystander confronting and disarming one of the attackers an act officials have publicly praised as heroic and potentially life-saving.

Police further disclosed that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were discovered in connection with the suspects, prompting extensive bomb-disposal operations and searches across multiple Sydney suburbs. No additional devices are believed to pose a current threat.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting as “an act of evil antisemitism” and convened an emergency national security meeting. He announced heightened protection for Jewish schools, synagogues and community centres across Australia, while signalling a review of firearm access and counter-terrorism monitoring.

“This was an attack on innocent people celebrating their faith,” Albanese said, urging Australians to remain united and reject hate in all its forms.

Eyewitnesses told verified Sources that gunfire rang out for several minutes, triggering scenes of panic as people fled the beachfront area in search of safety. Parents were seen shielding children, while emergency responders worked to evacuate the wounded amid chaotic conditions.

Authorities say no extremist group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, but counter-terrorism units are examining ideological motivations, possible overseas links and whether any individuals provided support or prior knowledge.

As Australia mourns one of the deadliest attacks in its recent history, flags have been lowered nationwide, and vigils are being held in Sydney and other major cities in honour of the victims.

Prime Business Africa will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
