Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has vowed to sign the death warrants of suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Mrs. Fatima Abubakar and her six children in the Chiranci Dorayi area of the state, once they are convicted by a competent court of law, Prime Business Africa reports.
The governor made the pledge during a condolence visit to the family of the victims, describing the killings as heinous and unacceptable, and assuring residents that his administration would ensure justice is served strictly through due process.
Governor Yusuf said the same resolve would apply to other grave cases in the state, including the murder of Hanifa Abubakar, a five-year-old schoolgirl whose killing in 2021 sparked nationwide outrage, as well as the Gezawa arson attacks, where suspected arsonists set houses ablaze, leading to multiple deaths and injuries.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelHanifa was abducted and later killed in December 2021, with investigations linking the crime to her school proprietor and accomplices. The suspects were arrested, prosecuted and subsequently sentenced to death by hanging by a Kano State High Court. However, the execution of the sentence requires the governor’s formal approval, which Yusuf referenced while addressing the Dorayi killings.
Similarly, the Gezawa arson case involved violent attacks in Gezawa Local Government Area, where properties were deliberately set on fire and residents were trapped in the inferno. Several suspects were arrested and charged, with some cases resulting in capital convictions that also await executive approval for enforcement.
“I will not hesitate to sign the death warrant of anyone found guilty of these crimes by the court,” the governor said, while directing the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to fast-track the prosecution of suspects involved in the Dorayi incident.

The killing of Mrs. Abubakar and her six children had drawn widespread condemnation across Kano State, prompting demands for swift justice. Security agencies have confirmed that suspects are already in custody and that investigations have been concluded.
As part of the government’s response, Governor Yusuf approved a welfare support package for the bereaved husband and father, including the provision of a new house and other assistance aimed at helping him rebuild his life.
The governor’s stance has received backing from traditional and community leaders, including the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who has publicly urged the state government to ensure that convicted perpetrators of violent crimes face the full weight of the law.
Officials have, however, reiterated that while the state remains firm on accountability, no execution will be carried out without a valid court conviction, in line with Nigeria’s legal framework.
